Accent is not the same as tilde. So that children do not confuse them, they must first understand how to correctly place the accent on the stressed syllable of a word. In this way they will get a better understanding of how to correctly write the accent when appropriate.

We will explain the differences between accent and tilde and we will tell you how to teach children to use accents well through play.

1. The accent: The accent is the pronunciation that is given to a syllable distinguishing it from the others by a greater intensity, a longer duration or a higher tone. The syllable that has the highest tone of voice is called the tonic, and the rest are unstressed syllables. The accent is sometimes written and sometimes not, but all the words have a tonic accent.

2. The tilde: The tilde is an orthographic accent that tells us where the greatest strength of the voice should be, it is always placed on a vowel and indicates the stressed syllable of a word, has the shape of an inclined line and goes from right to left (´) accent is part of spoken language, and accent is part of written language.

In the following examples, the syllables highlighted in bold and capital letters are stressed syllables:

THEpiz, ACsa, Isa, moTOR, MUSass, caMEno, peNÚLscam, Neitherño, carTON.

1. The clapping game: So that the children become more familiar, we can play with them to clap, jump, an agreed signal in the place of the stressed syllable of the chosen words, and explain that all the words have a syllable in which we evoke the tone of voice. Too much exaggeration when pronouncing the stressed syllable will help children differentiate it.

2. Change the stressed syllable of place: We can also choose the same word and change the accent of place so that they see that it sounds different or that it does not have the same meaning.

Keep in mind that depending on where the stressed syllable is, the word will be sharp (the voice load goes on the last syllable), serious (the voice charge goes on the penultimate syllable), esdrújula (the voice charge goes on the penultimate syllable) or sobreesdrújula (when the voice charge is on the syllable before the penultimate syllable). And this will be the basis for learning how to correctly place the accent.

We can use this poem to explain to children the different meanings of the word by changing the place of the accent. For example, with the word doctor:

- Medico: First person singular present indicative of the verb medicar.

- Medicó: Third person singular of the past perfect indicative of the verb medicate.

- Physician: 1. It is said of that related to medicine or Person who practices medicine as a profession.

Thought a mischievous accent

that I was very bored,

what to play between the letters

it could be fun.

Between the letters jumped

knowing that his presence,

it was extremely important,

to make a difference.

Got in a word

where it did not correspond,

and altered the meaning

looking for what I wanted.

On the first syllable

in doctor was found,

but jumping to the last

in sharp turned it.

On the penultimate syllable

with i he slept for a while

and made the word serious

until he woke up.

Then to the penultimate

another little jump happened,

and the word before grave

by esdrújula changed

And how it started ended!

Treble, bass and esdrújulas

depend on your presence

That's why it's so important

pay attention and be patient.

To finish I leave you a phrase by José Alfredo Reyes: 'Something as small as an accent can make all the difference'.
